06/2005
Back in 2005 this international urban competition was about expansion of one of the largest estate housing in the post-communist block
countries (Petržalka). Reflecting many of serious disadvantages of the existing urban fabric – exalted scale of monotonous housing blocks,
loss of orientation inside the structure, insufficient public facilities – the new design was using different strategies for creating a dense but
structured city environment, a paradoxical centre on a periphery. The program for the four parts of the development included a metropolitan
area with shopping malls, high rise administrative towers and a city park, an adjacent housing settlement and a sporting complex both
closely connected to the natural surroundings. Also an important challenge of this project was dealing with infrastructures and a waste
dump which came into existence during the construction of Petržalka.
